Transition Putney Vermont puts Local Farms on the map!

The Transition Putney team has completed their Local Farm Directory and Produce Map.

http://transition.putney.net/farms.html

Our directory has over 45 farms from Southern Vermont and New Hampshire. This is a live interactive map allowing people to visually see all the farms in our area, get directions and farm details.

Using Google Map technology; it is a visually stunning showcase of the many farms in our area, and also a way to see each farm’s layout from the sky.. We are adding features all the time like a search system to help people find exactly what they want to purchase, or a listing of CSA or farmers markets in your area.. This will help local farmers sell produce and help people find farms near them. Southern Vermont is so rich in fruits and vegetables, many farms are pick your own, or offer CSA and are organic, we designed this website to encourage local food production and consumption. We are happy to list any farm in our area.

Attention Nature Lovers

Now is the time to hike the Black Gum Swamp trail at the Roger T. Parrott Conservation site located at the end of Bare Hill Road. See the Royal Ferns unfurling, see the Painted Trilliums in bloom and stand in awe of the Black Gum Trees as they awake from their winter slumber. All the while you will hear the song of the Wood Thrush. This is too lovely to miss. In the words of Walt Whitman, "tuck your trouser ends in your boots and have a good time".

Bike Project Needs YOUR Help

The Putney Green Bike Project is on hold, no bikes have been put out for use because of a number of issues. Your help is needed to solve these problems;

1. Bikes are often abused and left at random locations.
2. Bike repair and maintenance has typically been performed by a very busy town energy coordinator with other projects to get to.
3. Riders often do not use helmets, or lack respect for minimum age requirements. (When young riders get on adult bikes it is not safe)

Walkers support clean energy. Celebrate with them in Putney!

Would you go the distance to support a cause you believe in? For some, the distance is a 126-mile walk from Brattleboro, Vermont to Montpelier’s Vermont Statehouse. The historic event will carry citizens of Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire along a winding, mid-winter path for 12 days starting January 2nd, 2010. Walkers will hand-deliver formal messages of support for changing the way New Englanders make and use energy to members of the Vermont legislature.

On January 2nd, the first stop will be downtown Putney’s Community Center. From 5 – 7pm the public is invited to join the walkers for a soup and cornbread supper, while enjoying Latin music provided by Dan Dewalt and friends.

No Idling in Putney

(From Daniel Hoviss - PEC)

While many of you already know how bad idling is for your health, your car's engine, and the environment - you may be pleased to know that Putney has an official no idling resolution.

While this is a resolution and not an enforceable law, it is nevertheless a good first step in communicating the ills of excessive idling.
