Full Moon on Putney Mountain

The Putney Mountain Association presents:

Autumnal Moonrise & Sunset Atop Putney Mountain with Louise Garfield - Friday, September 28--5:45 PM at the top of Putney Mountain

The night before the September full moon, the Corn Moon, is a perfect opportunity to watch the sun go down over the Vermont hills to the west, and the moon rise over the New Hampshire hills looking east. Official sunset time is 6:36, and moonrise is 5:37, but each orb has natural obstacles that have the effect of a marvelous near-sychronized event that can be seen from the summit of Putney Mountain.

Louise seeks full moon rises at sunset wherever she goes, having learned of the coincidence in her studies at Hampshire College in the 1970s. She looks forward to hearing others' stories. We hope for clear skies for perfect viewing; call 387-5548 for questions (or check the http://putneymountain.org for an alternate date). Carpool, park and climb the mountain on your own.

Hands-On Solar Power Curriculum: Intensive Teacher Training

The Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP) is inviting all teachers of grades 6-12 (public, private, and home-school) to attend a two-day workshop during the in-service days of October 20 and 21. Teachers will learn about the science and the real-life application of solar power, and they will receive training in VEEP's hands-on, minds-on "PV's Clean and Green" curriculum, which they can use directly in their classes.

"No matter what your current understanding of solar energy is, this workshop has something for you," said Abe Noe-Hays, one of the two VEEP educators leading the event. "If you are fuzzy on the science of photovoltaic panels or electricity in general, we will bring you up to speed in a hands-on, accessible way. Or if electricity and solar panels are second nature to you, the training will give you tools and activities to break the science down into intuitive chunks that your students can grasp quickly.”
